A Home for Mom – Close to Heart

When Sarah’s mom, Linda, started forgetting to take her medications and struggled with daily tasks, Sarah and her husband John knew it was time to make a change. They wanted to ensure Linda’s safety without completely upending her sense of independence. That’s when they discovered the perfect solution: an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in their spacious backyard.

The 600-square-foot one-bedroom cottage they built gives Linda her own cozy living space, complete with a kitchenette and small garden area. It’s close enough for Sarah to pop over for daily check-ins and shared meals, yet far enough to give Linda the privacy she cherishes. John, a nurse, can easily monitor Linda’s health, while their kids, Emma and Ethan, love having grandma just steps away for storytimes and cookie-baking sessions.

This arrangement has proven more affordable than assisted living facilities in their area, and it’s allowed Linda to remain an integral part of family life. She gets the support she needs while still feeling like she has her own home.

ADUs for aging loved ones offer a beautiful balance of independence and security. Another couple tells a similar story of downsizing into an ADU, giving their children the main home. It’s a win-win that keeps families connected while respecting everyone’s need for personal space.
